Spokes make noise / crack

My front or rear wheel spokes crack (at regular intervals).

  1. The spokes settle themselves with increasing mileage and use of the bike, especially with increased payload. This is a totally normal process and requires regular checking and tightening of the spokes.
  2. Check your spokes regularly and have them tightened by a specialist or bicycle shop if you don't think you can do it yourself. This process is perfectly normal as the spokes can settle after a certain amount of use.
  3. Locate the cracking spoke(s) by checking the tension or strength of each spoke (nipple) with your fingers.
  4. Then tighten them carefully with a spoke wrench. Keep in mind the correct rotational direction: Clockwise is to loosen, Counter Clockwise is to tighten.
  5. Make sure that the rim is still neatly centered by letting it rotate freely and observe whether it’s unbalanced resulting in any movement to the left or right or up or down.
